A planet that appears to reverse
Once a year Saturn appears to stop and travel backwards through the zodiac for about four and a half months. Not really backwards. The planet keeps orbiting the Sun in the same direction it always has. What changes is our view of it from a moving earth, the same way a slower car beside you on the motorway seems to slide behind you when you speed up.
Astrologers have watched this apparent reversal for a very long time. Saturn is one of the old planets. Visible to the naked eye and tracked for around two thousand years. Nothing about reading its retrograde is a recent invention. What each tradition made of that backward motion is another matter. Worth separating the mechanics from the meaning before going further.
When it happens and why the dates wobble
Go looking for the start date of this retrograde and you will find sources that do not agree. Some say the twenty-sixth of July. Some say the twenty-seventh. A few give times down to the minute that contradict each other.
The disagreement is not carelessness. Saturn near a station moves so slowly that pinning the exact moment it changes direction depends on which ephemeris a site uses. Those differ slightly at the level of hours. The robust facts underneath the noise are steady enough. Saturn turns retrograde in late July 2026 at around 14 degrees of Aries. It creeps backward to around 8 degrees of Aries. It turns direct again in the second week of December. The whole retrograde happens inside Aries.
One more source of confusion worth clearing up. Some sites will tell you this retrograde happens in Pisces rather than Aries. Those are using the sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology, which measures the signs from a different starting point. In the tropical system used across most of the Western tradition, the one behind my own work, Saturn spends this entire retrograde in Aries. Neither system is wrong. They answer the question with different rulers. Mixing those answers is what produces the contradiction.
What retrograde actually means
Here is where the pop version tends to go astray. A retrograde planet gets talked about as though something has gone wrong. As though the sky has turned against you for a few months. That framing does the technique a disservice.
The older reading is quieter and more useful. A retrograde planet turns its attention inward. Its business gets handled through revision, not through fresh action. For Saturn, the planet of structure and long consequences, that tends to show up as a season for going back over what you have built. Not a season for breaking new ground. The commitments you made in haste. The boundaries you have let slip. The responsibilities you took on without checking whether they still fit.
In practice this often reads less like a crisis and more like a slow audit. Whatever you signed up for comes back around for a second look. A plan that was moving forward stalls in a way that turns out to be useful. The pause exposes a flaw you would have built straight over. The work of these months tends to be unglamorous and quietly consequential.
None of this arrives on a schedule you can predict from the transit alone. Saturn describes a kind of pressure and a direction of attention. What it actually turns up depends on what you built and what you have been avoiding looking at.

Whether a bold move made a while ago was built on anything solid. The review these months invite is a review of your own capacity to begin things and see them through. That is the territory Aries governs. It is also the pressure Saturn applies.
This passage also belongs to a longer story. Saturn has been moving in and out of the border between Pisces and Aries since 2023, edging across and slipping back more than once. It stays in Aries through 2028. This retrograde is one chapter of that longer settling, not an isolated event.
What you can look at in your own chart
To bring this down to your own case, the useful thing to find is where 8 to 14 degrees of Aries falls in your chart, because that is the stretch Saturn is reviewing as it moves back. If you have a planet or an angle in the early-to-middle degrees of Aries, or in the same stretch of the other cardinal signs, meaning Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, this retrograde makes contact with your chart directly and the review it describes lands on something specific.
