The mechanism first
Saturn takes roughly twenty-nine and a half years to travel the whole zodiac. Somewhere around your twenty-ninth birthday it arrives back at the exact degree it occupied when you were born. That arrival is the Saturn return.
Nothing mystical in the machinery. It is a planet finishing a lap.
What makes it worth a whole article is the consistency of what people report while it happens. I have read charts for twenty years and this is the transit clients name without prompting. They come in describing a year where the scaffolding came down and they arrive at the word themselves before I mention Saturn at all.
Saturn belongs to the oldest layer of the craft. Visible to the naked eye, tracked by every ancient astrological tradition, the outermost thing anybody could see before telescopes. It has always been read as the planet of limit and consequence. Nothing about that assignment is modern.
When yours falls
The first Saturn return lands between twenty-eight and thirty for almost everybody. The second Saturn return arrives between fifty-seven and sixty. A third, for those who get there, comes somewhere around eighty-seven to ninety.
The variation of a year or two comes from Saturn's orbit not being perfectly even and from where in a sign your Saturn sits. Nobody gets it exactly at thirty.
More useful than the age is the sign. Your return happens when transiting Saturn re-enters the sign and degree of your natal Saturn. Everyone born inside a two-and-a-half-year window shares the same return years. Saturn was last in Aries from April 1996 to June 1998 and again from October 1998 to 1 March 1999. Those are the people in their first return now. The gap between those two stretches is real and it matters. Saturn moved into Taurus in June 1998 then reversed back into Aries in October. Anybody born in that four-month gap has a Taurus Saturn and their return starts in 2028 instead.
For second returns the relevant window is March 1967 to April 1969.
Why it is not a date
Here is the part most articles skip. Saturn spends about four and a half months of every year moving backwards from our vantage point. When that Saturn retrograde period happens to fall near your natal degree, Saturn crosses the point three separate times. Forward, back, forward again.
Three crossings spread across two to three years. This is why the return so rarely feels like an event and so often feels like a season that will not end.
The first pass tends to raise the question. The retrograde pass tends to be where the negotiating happens. Usually it is the least comfortable of the three. The final direct pass tends to be where whatever was decided becomes structural.
People with a single-pass return exist too when the retrograde loop misses their degree. Those tend to be shorter and sharper.
What actually happens
Careful here because this is where the transit gets oversold in both directions. Some accounts promise catastrophe. Others flatten it into a growth opportunity with nothing at stake.
What I see in practice sits between those. Saturn tends to test structures for load-bearing capacity. Relationships, careers, cities, beliefs about who you are. Whatever was built on something borrowed or provisional tends to show that during these years. Whatever was built properly tends to survive and often gets formalized.
The endings that happen around a first return are frequently things that were already over and had not been said out loud. The beginnings tend to be less exciting and more durable than the ones people chose at twenty-three.
None of this is a sentence. Some people go through a first return with no visible drama at all and describe it afterwards as the year they stopped performing. The transit describes a pressure rather than an outcome. What that pressure does depends on what it finds.
The three returns are not the same
The first return usually asks whether the adult life somebody assembled belongs to them. Careers chosen for a parent, cities chosen for a partner, an identity assembled at nineteen and never revisited.
The second, near sixty, works differently. Most of the structures are built by then. What Saturn tends to examine is whether they still hold anything alive. The questions get more honest because there is less time to spend on the wrong answer. This is often the more profound of the two and it gets almost no attention because the astrology internet is written for people in their twenties.
A third return around ninety is rare enough that I have read only a handful.
Saturn in Aries: the return happening now
Saturn first touched Aries in May 2025, reversed back into Pisces in September, and returned in February 2026, this time until April 2028. Anyone with natal Saturn in the earliest degrees of Aries already had their first pass last summer, which is exactly the three-crossing pattern described above. The current first returns belong to the 1996 to 1999 cohort and the second returns to those born from 1967 to 1969.
Aries adds a specific flavour. Traditional astrology places Saturn in fall in Aries. The planet is considered uncomfortable there. Saturn wants to weigh and delay. Aries wants to go. The friction between those two impulses is the texture of this particular return. It tends to show up as pressure around self-direction. Whether you can start something alone. Whether you can sustain it after the initial charge wears off.
Finding your own
Your Saturn sign comes from your birth date alone in most cases since Saturn moves slowly enough that the hour rarely changes it. The exception is if you were born on a day Saturn changed signs.
The degree is what dates your return. The house it falls in tells you which part of life the pressure lands on. That second part needs your birth time. If you know your rising sign you already know how the houses are arranged and you can get all three anchors free from the Sun, Moon and Rising Sign Calculator. No birth time? It is findable more often than people think.
Once you have the degree, the questions that open up are which house holds it, what Saturn rules in your chart and what else it touches on the way through. A full natal chart reading works through all of that by hand including the timing of your three passes if the return is anywhere near.
