You Can Now Read Your Sun and Your Moon

This lesson brings no new pieces. With what you already know you read your Sun and your Moon from start to finish, using a method that works later for every planet.

Anyone who has learned a second language remembers the day a street sign simply made sense. Nothing got translated in their head. For months the grammar and the vocabulary had lived in separate drawers. Then one afternoon they worked together without being asked. This lesson is meant to be that afternoon. It brings nothing new. With what you already know you are going to read your Sun and your Moon from start to finish, using a method that will later work for every other planet.

Keep the wheel from lesson two in front of you and write down the sign of your Sun and the sign of your Moon. We will go through the steps with an example first. After that it is your turn.

First, check your Moon

The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days. If you were born on a day when it crossed from one sign into the next, the date alone cannot tell you where it was and the birth time decides.

The Sun has a milder version of the same issue. It changes sign once a month and the exact day of the change shifts slightly from one year to another. A birthday right on the edge between two signs needs the birth time to settle which one is yours. If you gave the calculator your time, this is already handled. If you do not know it, lesson seventeen covers what can be read without it.

The steps, with an example

The example chart has the Sun in Aquarius and the Moon in Cancer.

First, the actor

Begin with the planet, the same way the sentence in lesson three began. The Sun is the self you are growing into, a direction more than a starting point. The Moon is what you need in order to feel safe and the way you react before you have time to think. Keep the job of each one in mind before any sign enters the picture.

Then the two words

Aquarius is fixed air. Cancer is cardinal water. That already tells you how each actor goes about its job. A Sun in Aquarius tends to grow by thinking for itself and holding on to an idea once it has one. A Moon in Cancer looks for safety by taking care of people and making some corner of the world feel like home.

Then the ruler

Aquarius belongs to Saturn in the classical scheme and to Uranus in the modern one. Both lend this Sun some structure along with an independent streak. Cancer belongs to the Moon itself. This Moon is in its domicile. It tends to do its job easily, sometimes so easily that the person never notices how much of the day revolves around feeling at home.

Last, a sentence and more than one way to live it

Put each light into one plain sentence. My Sun in Aquarius grows by thinking for itself. My Moon in Cancer needs a home base to feel well.

Then picture how each sentence can play out, because no placement means only one thing. This Moon can belong to someone whose kitchen is always open to friends. In someone else the same Moon turns into worry, a constant checking that everyone is all right. Both come from the same place. What changes is how it is carried.

The Sun and the Moon together

Now set them side by side. Compare the elements first and the modalities second. When the two share an element, what you are growing toward and what you need usually point the same way. When they do not, a small tension appears that is worth understanding.

In the example the Sun is air and the Moon is water. The Sun wants a little distance in order to think clearly. The Moon wants closeness in order to feel safe. This person may defend their independence in public and then feel lonely at home. Another version gives up some freedom for a warmth that later feels hard to leave.

The modalities add one more layer. The cardinal Moon moves first to look after people while the fixed Sun keeps its views steady. That tension is no defect to be fixed. Knowing it helps you stop fighting one half of yourself.

If your Sun and Moon share a sign you were born close to a new Moon. What you seek and what you need sit very near each other. That usually brings a lot of coherence along with a narrower view of whatever lies outside that sign. If they sit in opposite signs you were born close to a full Moon. The two halves then pull toward opposite sides of the wheel and much of life goes into finding a way to honor both.

Reading sheet for the example, with the Sun in Aquarius and the Moon in Cancer. The actor: the Sun is the self you are growing into and the Moon is what you need in order to feel safe. The two words: Aquarius, fixed air, and Cancer, cardinal water. The ruler: Saturn in the classical scheme and Uranus in the modern one for the Sun, and the Moon itself, in its domicile, for the Moon. The sentence: grows by thinking for itself, and needs a home base to feel well. Together: air and water are different elements and a small tension appears. Fixed and cardinal: the Moon moves first and the Sun holds steady.
The four steps of the example on one sheet, for the Sun and for the Moon.

Now your own

Do the same with yours. For each light write down the actor, its two words, its ruler and one sentence. Then write two different ways that sentence could be lived and notice which one sounds more like you. Finally compare the elements and the modalities of your Sun and your Moon.

Blank reading sheet with two columns, Sun and Moon, and five rows to fill in: the actor, the two words, the ruler, the sentence and two ways to live it. Below, two lines to compare the elements and the modalities.
Your sheet. Copy it onto paper or save the image and fill it in with your Sun and your Moon.

What is still missing

What you just wrote is real, though it is only half the picture. You know what your Sun does and the manner it does it in. You do not know yet where all of this plays out, whether in work or love or family or friendship. The houses answer that question and they start in the next block. The first step toward them is the horizon, the line that split the sky into what was above the ground and what was below it at the moment you were born.
